I came up as a performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and the improv classes taught there were always full of people who never planned to perform. Professionals showing up on a Tuesday night after work, not trying to get noticed by Saturday Night Live, but because something in that room followed them out of it. Into meetings. Into arguments. Into their own kitchens.

They listened harder. They spoke before they'd polished it. They found out the unrehearsed version of themselves was the one people wanted around.

Kids could be learning this at nine instead of thirty-nine.

That was the bet. It was right.

BEHIND THE BLURT

Tom White

FOUNDER, LEAD INSTRUCTOR

Tom White is the founder and lead instructor of Blurt. He brings more than two decades of experience as a professional performer, educator, and coach to every class and workshop.

Tom spent years performing weekly at New York City’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, one of the country’s most influential comedy institutions. His television and film credits include Succession, Mr. Robot, Blindspot, Madam Secretary, The Blacklist, Sharper, and Passing. He has also performed Off-Broadway and at theaters including Cleveland Play House, Portland Stage, and the Alliance Theatre. His comedy work has been featured by The New York Times, New York Post, and The Today Show.

Just as central to Tom’s work is his background in education. He served as an educator and program leader with Exploration’s summer programs at Wellesley College, helping create thoughtful, challenging experiences where young people could explore new interests and grow in confidence.

That combination of professional craft and genuine care shapes everything Blurt does. Tom creates playful, supportive rooms where kids feel comfortable taking creative risks, listening to one another, and discovering how much fun it is to build something together.
